More companies released FW I/O devices which rely on Apple OS X FireWire drivers this year. And it took Apple almost TWO years to confirm that this problem does exist. The OS X firewire audio problem is known for some Mac users since the release of OS X. This firewire driver is not suitable for transferring audio and it causes problems and issues like "Random offset" (of recorded or simply incomming audio). Unfortunately their devices are using native apple's FireWire driver. The OS X situation with firewire I/O devices, in general, is following: a lot companies ( Apogee, Focusrite, Presonus, Yamaha to name some of them) advertise their products as "OSX compatible" or similar. MLAn is a protocol developed by Yamaha for transferring audio and MIDI data over single firewire cable (FW400). Why should be interested although you are not using mLAn gear?
